OUR SERVICES

Welcome to Positive Living Psychological Services, LLC. The practice is located in Ramsey, New Jersey (Bergen County) and is currently accepting new patients. My name is Dr. Eugene Dunaev and I am the principal NJ Psychologist at the practice. I am a provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ (BCBS), Aetna, and United Healthcare/Oxford but I also submit claims for my patients to other insurance companies for out of network benefits. I am an expert CBT Psychologist. We are all living in a particularly difficult time, one that is filled with much uncertainty, fear, and loss. I also understand that finding a therapist and starting the process of therapy can be very anxiety-provoking and can certainly add to your current stress. However, therapy is a wonderful opportunity to drop our pretenses, seek relief, confess our worst feelings, and discover the power of unconditional acceptance. In my work, I strive to create a process of spiritual and emotional freedom to be spontaneous without fearing the loss of ones’ control. Finally, I would like to add that in addition to English, I also speak Russian and have profound experience with Eastern European cultures.

Therapy

Therapy is a dynamic experience, as it is unique to each person, each therapist, and most importantly, to each client/therapist relationship. It is never static and always moves along with the changes a person experiences in therapy. An overarching goal of my practice is to utilize a person's talents, strengths, creativity, wisdom and optimism to help individuals regain control of their complicated lives. As such, people I work with are viewed as experts and engineers of their Good Lives.

Assessment

I also offer individually administered, personalized, and comprehensive assessments in order to obtain detailed information about an individual’s cognitive, behavioral, social/emotional, adaptive, and academic functioning. These assessments will give insight into the client’s unique pattern of strengths and weaknesses so that I may provide personalized strategies and support in order to improve academic performance and assist in developing success in school and in life.

Career Counseling

One's career is often one of the most important aspects of adulthood, and embarking on a new career, whether for the first time, the second time, or any time thereafter, can be a stressful event, especially when economic difficulties such as recession are a factor. I offer counseling designed to help with choosing, changing, or leaving a career at any stage in life. In addition, I offer interview coaching services. Please reach out to us for more information.

Consultation

Upon request, I can provide workshop trainings on a wide variety of topics, including stress management, anger management, integration of faith in therapy, among others. In addition, I can provide consultation regarding interviewing skills and performance management.

With safe, confidential video conferencing technology, you can receive treatment and therapy from the safety of your home. This is done via an easy-to-use, secure, and HIPAA compliant video conferencing platform that connects you directly with me.  This service delivery provides my clients with much more flexibility. Goals of Therapy:

I have received extensive training in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a form of active therapy which is based on clinical research and demonstrates both efficacy and effectiveness for a large range of psychological issues. In addition, I have received training in Psychodynamic and Person-Centered Therapy, which are also significant aspects of my practice. Most importantly, my practice is based on the principles of Positive Psychology. This field of psychology emphasizes the study of positive human functioning, what makes people thrive, what makes life meaningful and the impact of these factors on individual, relational, cultural and global dimensions. It is here that I frequently use "Vision Boards" which is a therapeutic process that relies on imagery to clarify, and maintain focus on particular goals. While Positive Psychology can bring about meaningful changes in people struggling with various emotional and behavioral issues, I particularly find this approach useful with individuals that have been diagnosed with various chronic medical conditions, including but not limited to HIV/AIDS, cancer, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. In the end, it all comes down to the therapeutic relationship. It is the strongest predictor of therapeutic success. It’s important that I gain your trust so that, in time, you feel free to share your life experiences, including thoughts, fears, wishes, and concerns. My ability to gain your trust depends on a number of factors. First, it’s important for you to feel I’m not judging you. Equally important is the principle of unconditional positive regard, which involves showing complete support and acceptance of a person no matter what that person says or does. It is also crucial that I can empathize with you. This process is based on my ability to mentalize the experiences of those I work with so vividly which then allows me to guide you to find your good life. Finally, it is important for you to know that what you share with me is confidential. I will not discuss it with others. These factors are all very important hallmarks of any therapeutic relationship.

About Dr. Dunaev, NJ Psychologist

I obtained a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (accredited by the American Psychological Association). Given that this program is located within a medical school, I internalized a holistic approach to addressing issues of the mind and body. This also spurred my interest in Health Psychology. In addition, my doctoral and clinical training was based on a scientist-practitioner model which emphasizes not only the art of clinical practice, but also psychology as a science derived from clinical research. Along the way, I have been involved in and have conducted research to further my knowledge in my areas of expertise. Prior to my doctoral work, I received a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. My undergraduate work was also completed at Rutgers University, where I received a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Psychology and Finance. For my pre-doctoral training, I completed an internship in Clinical Psychology. During my psychology internship placement, I worked at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital under the direct supervision of several licensed psychologists. There, I worked with an interdisciplinary team for the integration of behavioral and psychiatric care. I conducted intensive cognitive-behavioral therapy, as well as testing and assessment with adults across the lifespan who had a broad range of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral issues. In addition, I completed my practicum training at Newton Memorial Hospital (New Jersey), where I treated mood and life transition issues within the adolescent and adult populations. During my graduate training, I also accumulated experience working with victims of physical and sexual trauma. I then continued to further my expertise in this field.

I look forward to having the opportunity to help you any way that I can.
